Biography

Erica Smith Ramos (b.1981) is a Mexican/American multi-disciplinary artist primarily working on photography, drawing and painting.  Her early career years start off as a graphic designer. Thus, in short time Erica also gains great passion for photography. Deciding to combine both skills, she opens her own visual consulting firm called Catcher´s Design; whose core mission is to visually promote the arts and socially-driven projects.  It is also around this time when Erica experiences major trauma in her personal life, which importantly marks a new direction in her professional development as an artist.  At this point, she starts exploring drawing and painting as expressive therapy. Her extensive cultural upbringing has deeply influenced her work. She holds a BA in Graphic Design from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and an MFA in Fine Arts from Wimbledon College of Arts.  She is currently based in South East London.

Statement

Guided by the visceral inputs and experiences I ingest on a daily basis, my work explores the intricate breach that nestles between our emotions and our perceptions. By interchangeably working across photography, drawing and painting, I investigate the transitory states of time, space and memory often overseen amongst the mundane.

Influenced by my own Third Culture Kid (TCK) way of life, my work grounds itself on the emotional state of yearning. Displacement, identity and belonging issues run deep in a global nomad´s psyche- where ‘Home’ is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. This constant state of flux and limbo creates a primal propulsion to empathise with the underlying skin of the different environments and experiences I situate myself on a daily basis.
